we walked into the house carrying a pinata bought on a whim at a mexican supermercado in hartford, mi. intending it mostly as a gag, the night turned sublime when sid drilled a hole in the ceiling, the four kids were instructed to run upstairs and put on costumes, and a blunted piece of wood was found that could be wielded with ease by children ages 4-8. events unfolded from there, culminating in tequila shots for any adult participants and kate beautifully executing the grand finale with a baseball bat.
afterward, aftermath, children still costumed, pinata decapitated and finding afterlife as mask, tree topper, stage prop, a small child sat on my lap and the man next to me read him a bedtime story. bear snores on. i won’t forget it.
how lucky am i to have such game friends? this marks year four of new year’s eve with sid & kate, ken & carrie. can’t wait for next year. we’ll be there, even if it means crossing the atlantic.

Well. The fact that it was Bear Snores On really seals the deal for me once and for all.
